“HARD GOALS” for the coming New Year

Open Book Review and Discussion based on the book:

The book authored by Mark Murphy

Tuesday Evening 12.28.10 at 7

Greetings All,

I totally hate New Year’s resolutions. I always fail at them. I never understood why until reading this book by Mark Murphy.  He discards the traditional thinking on goal setting and presents a new and an actually much simpler structure for framing your most important objectives.  This mind-set will be an important foundation for the $timulus Group members in 2011 as we move to focus on specific objectives, action steps to accomplish them and meaningful group accountability. If it isn’t directly or indirectly supporting our key objectives we shouldn’t be wasting time doing it.

“Hard Goals” Discussion Points:

  • Why traditional “Smart Goals” aren’t so smart after all
  • Why “HARD Goals” aren’t so hard after all
  • Why most New Year’s Resolutions crash and burn so fast
  • Dealing with the subtle, yet deadly, sabotage of procrastination
  • New working “methodologies” vs. fluff and excuses
  • Why “procrastination” is worse than outright failure
  • Why “dreaming” isn’t a waste of time
  • Why finding and/or creating your “team” is mandatory
  • H= Heartfelt, anything less will not set your soul on fire
  • A= Animated, anything less equals boredom
  • R= Required, meaning that it is part of you DNA
  • D= Difficult, as in Steve Jobs doesn’t copy anyone
  • “Deeply fulfilled, emotionally resilient, high achieving, meaningful and significant life” vs. “happy”
  • Intrinsic, Personal and Extrinsic values
  • Dealing with the inevitable “shoves” and “tugs” of life
  • Why and how “pronouns” matter in goal setting and achievement
  • Importance of “specificity” in attaining objectives
  • fMRI or what the brain scan saw in terms of connectivity and results
  • Building a new vocabulary and emotional framework for achievement strategy

“Ever felt like you weren’t reaching your goals as fast as you would like? HARD Goals shows you how to change your thinking and get on the path to tremendous achievement!”

Marshall Goldsmith, executive coach and author of MOJO and What Got You Here Won’t Get You There

Are your personal goals "HARD" enough to get you there?

Please do bring your business cards so that you can discuss your HARD GOALS with others as we make our way to Steak & Shake for a cup of coffee or a bite to eat after the group ends at B&N.
