SHIFT: how to reinvent…according to Peter Arnell

An Open Book Review and Discussion on the Book:

Shift: how to reinvent your business, your career and your personal brand

Written by Peter Arnell

This week, a quirky little book about a quirky little man, at least he is little now. Peter Arnell once weighed over four-hundred pounds on a roughly five foot frame. The book speaks to big issues though and through both success and failure Arnell deserves focused attention. He has created brands and products, and crashed and burned along with them.

Yet, like Campbell’s Hero with a Thousand Faces Arnell speaks to the greater issues of vision, risk, facing great fears, re-inventing, change, losing, reconfiguring, winning and moving on. The book has personal development traits but it is not a personal development book. Likewise there are aspects of a memoir, business manual and a motivational text- although these fail to accurately describe the final product either. Deftly penned, it is a shared revelation of a man willing to put it out there and risk yet more ridicule and failure. He triumphs though and in the final product and message lays a scrumptious orange-flavored victory.

Peter lost 256 pounds eating mostly oranges, up to fifty per day.  “I peeled the oranges and the oranges peeled me,” he can be found to say during interviews with Matt Lauer, Martha Stewart and others. But the oranges (and even the weight) are a talisman and a touchstone for the greater changes going on deep within.

Con Edison DKNY, Chanel, Samsung, Pepsi, Reebok, Fendi, Home Depot, GNC, and the Special Olympics are just some of the top brands that have worked with Arnell.

Written in a bite-sized blog air the emotionally honest and soul-exposing chapters are short, concise, and carefully created. Each like an orange can be peeled and consumed never needing to swallow more than you hunger for in one sitting.

Catch These SHIFTing Sands:

  • “Fish Where the Fish Are,” what does that mean to you?
  • ConEd is “On It!” What is your message?
  • “Be a tiger!” What Montecore did, per Chris Rock…
  • Do you have a “Personal Fan Club?”  What do you really need from them?
  • Do you have a “Personal Vision, a Dream, a Mission, bigger than yourself? What is that? Why?
  • Do you “play safe or on-the-edge?” Why?
  • Overcoming Fear, how?
  • The true power of “Positive Emotion” and what it means …
  • Great Re-Branders: Mohammed Ali, Ochocinco, You?
  • What are the “oranges, touchstones and talismans” in your life?
  • Would your metaphor be to “Go Hydrogen” or to “Go Helium?” Why and How?
  • Are there dancing SoBe lizards in your life? What would your logo look like and do?
  • Looking back to focus forward
  • Imagine, Reinvent, do you dare?
  • What would love to change? What small “SHIFT could you take in the next 24 hours?
